COMMUNITY SERVICE UPDATE

Community service is an important component of an Open High education. Each year we ask students to complete 30 hours of documented community service with a non-profit organization for a total of 120 hours over four years. Our goal is to help students see the value of giving back to their community. COVID has made volunteer service more complicated, but we still want our students to find ways to serve their community. As a reminder, here are changes made to required hours over the past few years:

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED (modified for COVID)

  • Class of 2023: 60 hours
  • Class of 2024: 75 hours
  • Class of 2025: 105 hours
  • Class of 2026: 120 hours

If you have volunteered at Open in any capacity over the past two years, this counts towards your total hours! Always ask your teachers and staff about ways to serve your school. Contact Brigette (newberr@rvaschools.net), the Volunteer Coordinator, for help finding suitable organizations and connect with her on Class Classrooms. Also see Brigette regarding Senior Projects.

For those who like to plan ahead, mark your calendars for James River Week, September 10-17! This week features programs and events that highlight the James River and includes an intensive cleanup of the river, Saturday, September 10 from 9-12. Register here to participate. This would be a great opportunity to complete required Community Service hours with a non-profit organization.

Remember summer service counts! You can download a form here and turn it in to Brigette Newberry, our Volunteer Coordinator.
