Dr. Thomas H. Beatty, Acting Principal — Open High School We are thrilled to share some wonderful news with you as we look ahead to an inspiring school year! Please join us in welcoming Dr. Thomas H. Beatty to Open High School, who will serve as Acting Principal for the 2026–2027 school year. Dr. Beatty comes to us with over 30 years of deep dedication to public and higher education, having spent his entire career lifting up schools, guiding educators, and making sure every student has the opportunity to thrive. Best of all, he is no stranger to our district—he has served Richmond Public Schools as a teacher, principal (leading both Richmond Community High School and Thompson Middle School), Executive Director of Secondary Education, and, most recently, as a mentor and coach to our school leaders. Beyond RPS, Dr. Beatty spent 11 years as an Assistant Professor of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he trained future principals, led early childhood initiatives, and secured over $1.2 million in grant funding to support local families. He holds a doctorate and master’s degree from William & Mary, a bachelor’s degree from VCU, and has been previously recognized as a Virginia Administrator of the Year. Above all, Dr. Beatty cares deeply about people and community. He is eager to step into this school year, working collaboratively alongside our amazing students, dedicated families, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners, while holding close the unique culture, traditions, and spirit that make Open High School so special. Dr. Beatty is honored to join our family and is committed to listening, building trust, supporting our incredible teachers, and ensuring that every single student feels known, valued, and inspired to succeed every day.
